26th May 2007 - Right, we've taken our team into Europe and now we know the stage at which we'll breenge in with a robust challenge that'll have some unsuspecting opponent on their arses before they know what's hit them. Being pleased about either of the old farm winning a trophy is a pretty rare occurrence - especially at TRF Towers - but this time it has to be considered satisfactory. Their victory means that the Dandies UEFA Cup place has precedence over that of Dunfermline and we'll get more preparation time before we enter the fray. It can only be a good thing to get that extra warm-up time and given a fair wind and a decent start in the SPL next time round we'll be match fit and well set for a decent campaign.

So what are our expectations for next season? Well, ever the optimists we can only cry onwards and upwards! We ended this past season as a team on the rise and next season is our chance to cash in on all fronts (as Stewartie formerly known as the Wigster likes to say). We were only a win and a couple of draws off second spot in the SPL so with a bit more dig up front and parsimony at the pack there's no reason why we can't move on up. We definitely need to do MUCH better in both domestic cup competitions - it is the good cup runs that generate the extra bit of excitement (and desire for cup tickets) to entice more punters to the league games which has a spin-off benefit in encouragement for the team and a few more notes in the AFC war chest. Last, but by no means least, if we can get into the league stages of the UEFA Cup then we can feel mighty pleased with ourselves - the players will gain valuable experience to set them up for the future, the fans'll get to see some exotic opposition (after Gretna almost anybody'll be exotic) and the club might just gather some much needed funds for carrying it into whatever lies ahead.

24th May 2007 - Jackie McNamara looks good in that new Dons strip, here's hoping he turns out to be as good a signing as the pundits are telling us and we can all become part of McNamara's Band. Shame he isn't a striker, there used to be a song about Joe Harper to that tune but it doesn't really work for defenders of midfielders (unless you know different).

22nd May 2007 - Hmmm... Dandies fans would probably accept just about anything from the club this week after they way they finished off the season, but its doubtful that anybody will have too much difficulty accepting the new strip designs. The black and gold job is especially appealing with its cry back to pre-war Dons who were more often called "The Wasps" rather than their present assorted nicknames. It all comes down to personal taste, of course, but your reporter isn't too impressed with the collar on the new first choice strip. However, the most important thing is that red predominates and as has become the norm, the only other hue is white so no worries there. As to prices, all football kit is over expensive whoever you support or wherever you shop for it (unless there's forgeries up for grabs on ebay) but the Aberdeen kit is no worse than most and more reasonable than some. Look our for early examples on holiday around the shrunken globe and what's the betting that Red Alert will soon be swathed in pictures of faithful Rudolphs sporting one or other shirt in increasingly exotic locations and participating in ever more ludicrous poses.

20th May 2007 - Don't ye jist hae a warm glow o a job weel done? The Red Army turned up in force and in the mood, knowing that the team was on the verge of something and with belief restored that they could deliver at last. What a great atmosphere and what a tremendous way to secure the chance to play in Europe after such a long break. We didn't need to rely on the favours of anybody else, the Redz just got on with it and my how we all laughed when the Kilmarnock result came through to sweeten our day. Congratulations to all the players, they all pulled together and its hard to pick out a man of the match (so we won't). The only real sour note was the cynical assault on Michael Hart after he was already injured, but by past standards it was a pretty disciplined match and even Zander kept his passion in control. Let's hope we are now on the verge of even bigger things next season, we definitely built the platform for a launch onwards and upwards and the players obviously enjoyed the experience so they'll be wanting some more thank you very much.

19th May 2007 - A pox on negativity, the Dons are more than capable of winning tomorrow and with the Red Army squaring up behind them there's no reason why they shouldn't do it. They want the win more than the huns do, they've got the fire power and the stopping power, all they have to do is get out there and complete the mission. Never mind hoping for favours from Kilmarnock, that ain't going to happen. Lets just stick it to the huns and the rest of Scottish fitba and get on with our own revival.

There seem to be a lot of people around who think that there's no point in the Dons getting into Europe, that they'll just get stuffed by the first team they meet. Bollocks to that - how does anybody think the players can progress if they don't add to and broaden their experience? We've come a long way in the past three seasons and it sure as hell beats scrabbling against relegation. Of course there's room for improvement and that's what the European stage should help to provide. You can bet you boots that at the start of the 1982-83 season there were people saying we'd be an embarrassment in the Cup-Winners Cup, but by the time we got to Gothenburg the doubting Thomases were probably right on the bandwagon. Nobody can claim that this side is as developed as some of our past teams, but they are on the way so back them up and stop moaning.

19th May 2007

You pull your midfield back - you push your fullbacks out

you jumble up you team and you shake it all about

you follow Jimmy's tactics till your head spins round

that's what it's all about!

Oh, Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy

Oh, Jimmy, Jimmy Jimmy

Oh, Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy

That's what the Dons' fans shout!

18th May 2007 - Don't know whether it could be an omen or not, but yesterday Pittodrie had a visit from a group of Seville fans hot from victory in the UEFA Cup. OBE found them hovering outside on the street and promptly whisked them in for a tour of the old place. Up the Beach End stairway with all that outrageous Gordon Reid sheep art and out onto the top deck giving them that spectacular view of the stadium and the city skyline. Pause for pictures and then back down to the trackside through the players tunnel where Paul the groundsman had a chat with them and more pictures were taken - hope they turn up on the web sometime. Back into the boot room and then along past the gallery of pictures of Dons successes which really impressed them and on to the boardroom for a look at some silverware and a fleeting chat with Len Taylor who was passing.

These were good lads who had a great time at Hampden and then slept on the streets of Weegieland before making their way back to civilisation in Aberdeen where they planned to catch their flight home. Despite the lack of a common language they made it clear that they were delighted to see Pittodrie, had got on fine with celtic fans over a few beers in Glasgow but had no time ro rangers fans. Handshakes all round and off they went declaring that they wanted the Dandies to face them in the Champions League the season after next (well, we can dream can't we?). Oh yeah, and they left behind a flag that they'd had at their match so you might just spot it at Pittodrie on Sunday, but you'll have to be quick in case a member of the constabulary (reluctantly we'd bet) confiscates it.

17th May 2007 - Grampian police really are a humourless bunch of constables. Life's getting to the point where you won't be allowed to fart or scratch your nose. The banning of banner displays on the strength of something that happened at ONE game on the AWAY terracing after years of allowing the use of flags is just laughable. All this nonsense about people dealing drugs or fighting under cover of the flags is enough to make a statue vomit. For a start most of the displays that you see are either only in place for a couple of minutes or the flags are constantly on the move with the help of the fans underneath and when it all started at Pittodrie a few years ago everybody seemed happy to take part in it.

Just because the police decide something, it doesn't mean to say that they are right. In this case they need to have a serious rethink as this looks to be a case of them making their job that is already difficult needlessly moreso. Surely there are enough problems in the world without spoiling honest efforts by fans to make matches a bit more enjoyable. There is no record of serious problems amongst Dons fans because of the flags although nobody would be naive enough to claim that there are no minor upsets and difficulties.

There are a few crotchety types on the terraces who object to their view being blocked - probably when the teams come out. But surely something could be done to compromise on that? There's no doubt that Aberdeen provides some of the best and most colourful shows in the UK with the flags - maybe even THE best, and often the crowd has been much more colourful that the team performances so we have needed to see and be a part of the displays. There has to be a way round this so here's hoping all concerned can work together to put things right and get the flags back on the go for next season.

14th May 2007 - This Press Release went out from the Supporters Trust today but probably won't appear in the papers so we thought we'd pass it on.

AFC Trust Call for Dons Fans aid Final European Push

The AFC Trust is calling all Dons fans to make Sunday's match with Rangers our Cup Final. A win will almost certainly be needed to return to Europe and that aim will be assisted by a full house at Pittodrie. The Trust hopes that remaining tickets will be quickly picked up by the Aberdeen support.

The team has shown the necessary attitude and consistency in the league over the season, to get to the point where one more win will secure the final UEFA Cup slot.
Despite any reservations fans may have had during the season, it is key to get 100% behind the team on Sunday, acting as the twelfth man, to secure the first Old Firm victory of this season and the European place.

13th May 2007 - Fox Bloody Ache min! We should have wiped the floor with the tawdry tims, we certainly had them on the back foot with some great chances. We all knew that celtic wouldn't fold for us like they did a couple of weeks back against Romanov's Radges or a week ago against Walter's Wasters, we all knew it would end up going down to the last weekend of the season with us needing to beat ra*#ers to secure that European place. We can do it, no question - it's just a case of belief and sheer hard graft. Thankfully we'll have Barry Nicholson back for this one and Jamie won't have to be exposed to another penalty kick. You had to feel for him with that lengthy wait between the pen being awarded and his chance to take it, but no pro should miss these, even if the defending goalie is on form. Oh aye, and why no sending off for that foul? Referees min! ye cannae be deein wi them and ye cannae dee wioot them.

For the second time this season Pittodrie should be packed to the rusting rafters for a visit from our deadliest and most despised rivals and this time our need and desire to win should make sure we put one over them. Stevie Lovell can do a hell of a lot better than he did at Parkhead and if he gets the same chances against the huns at Pittodrie next weekend he'll take them. Who knows what sort of lineup Mr. Roly Poly will put out come Sunday or what tactics he'll spring on us? What we do know is that the players'll be up for it, the crowd'll be up for it and we can't depend on Kilmarnock doing us any favours. All we've gotta do is get stuck in and win!

11th May 2007 - Ach well, today seems like as good a day as any to revive the TRF website.

We're practically losing count of how many years it is since Gothenburg but its still worth fondly remembering that glorious, soggy , noisy and spectacular night. If you were there, the memory will be fresh as the day Kennedy got shot or the Twin Towers were attacked, probably fresher ac't'ly. If you weren't there, and there's growing numbers of Dandies who are just too young to even remember it, you can still relish this highlight of Dons' history and bask in the reflected glory. On the other hand, we're all bursting to get back into Europe so maybe tomorrow will become a wee milestone on the Red Road with the Dandies whacking a couple past Celtic to secure the necessary points to clinch third place in the SPL. On the other hand, maybe we'll have to go to the wire and need three points against the dastardly huns next weekend - what a fixture that could be and what a way to leave a dirty great exclamation mark on the pages of history. Either way, all the best to our boys and as we always like to shriek at TRF - Come on you REDZZZZ
